The electronic games is effecting our daily life!!
Computer games! This is a big story. I love playing games and they are part of my life. I play all kinds of games and they influenced me at different levels. So I decided to do some research on electronic games (including computer games, video games, etc) and different people’s opinions about children playing games.I followed different news, blogs, reports and also some comments from some online discuss organizations. These story shows multiple aspects of games, and I will express this story in two parts they all reflect the different aspects of the game, and let us get started.
Chapter 1. Computer games appear!
“ This game is gonna change your life”. This is the first sentence from Mike Morhaime during the speech of the “World of warcraft” conference, who is the CEO of the biggest computer game company Blizzard. Almost ten years have passed, and the performance if Blizzard and also the influence of the game proved that Mike Morhaime’s talking was not a boast. With gorgeous efficacy and multiple plots. How many of you can image how the first computer game looked like and how it had been created ? Here comes the first story. The first computer gane was created by A,S.Douglas , who got a PHD degree at the University of Cambridge on Human- Computerin 1952, the name of the game is called “space war”. The game was programmed on a EDSAC vaccuum-tube-computer. Since then the development of programming began to advance rapidly.,and since then a new industry appeared silently. In the beginning period of the game history, it seems like the development of game producing is largo and lack of new. All produced games are simple, 2D, and had similar function. The only thing changed was the theme of the games. It is easy to explain. Firstly, the technical reasons. At that period, computers are all made by tubes and they are big and single-use only few people are using them, and most of them were scientists, they don’t play games.Secondly, I think the reason should be the narrow market. In my point of view, A.S Douglas had never thought about the market of computer games, and he would not thought about the types of the game and how would people like them. So, at that period the producing of PC games is just kind of researching labs for several scientists who interested in this research topic. Big things happened in the 1990s. With the popularization of personal computers, the fabrication of computer games reached the top notch. Not only the new sight system had been created, but also different kinds of producing functions had been created by professional programmers. Big profit gaming company had been found. Since then the influence of computer and video games started to show up. And the second part of the story is about to start.
Chapter 2. The debate among people about playing games.
After reading the first part of the story, we have a basic understanding of the games. And in the second part of the story. I followed some comment platforms, continuing reports, as well as some blogs. All these informations are about how electronic games influence young people’s life , and how the parents and old people think about playing computer games , the last discussion is what is the government going to deal with the social problems brought by the games. In this part I’m going to make a comparison between two different countries, China and America, and do some personal analysis about it.
Whenever an emerging thing appear in our daily life, the big debate followed. It is obvious that the debate about if young people should play PC games is one of the biggest issue since the information-based society had been built. Before getting into the big argument, let us check out some reports of the reality first, That should be the background of this argument. Before we want to judge and analysis others’ comment figure out the current situation is always be the right thing.
(1)Video game addiction: 81% of American youth play; 8.5% are addicted. This report is some of the results of “A new survey of 1178 US teenagers( age 8 to 18) conducted online by Harris in January, 2007. But take a look at the research time. Its in 2007, here is another report (2)from Chicago in 2010 : 92% American youth really into social medias and electronic games. According to the report, young people now devote an average of seven hours and 38 minutes to daily media use and game time, or about 53 hours a week --It is even more than a full-time job!
Okay, now let us see how Chinese youth doing.(3)This report is researched by CNNIC report, and it shows that in resent 2 years the increasing of youth play computer games have never stopped, in 2010 only 39% youth loving playing PC games, but in 2012, the percentage increased to 59% !!And another amazing data shows that 69% of the youth who love playing games addicted to the game.
And based on these realities, now let’s see what American parents and Chinese parents response to this social situation. (4)From another report about how parents’ attitude on electronic games.89% percents believe that the violence in today’s video games is a problem, and 75% of American parents said they won’t oppose their children playing video games. “It is not bad to play some video games after my boy has finished his homework, and sometimes our family play tennis on TV together, it is a lot of fun, but if my kid spend too much time on it, that is a problem, I will talk to him.” said by Merri, an American mother. But the response from Chinese parents is not quite similar. 93% of the Chinese parents opposite their children play computer games, and 79% of the Chinese parents express that they might stop their children from playing games constrainedly. The perfect hours that Chinese parents think children are able to play video games is zero!
In order to control the bad influence from the video games, the American government introduced some policy about youth gaming, such as in 2008, the California government made a new policy that all video games need to be reviewed and decided if they are safe enough to sell to underage youth. And in China, it seems like the government does not pay sufficient attention on youth gaming, the only sort of provision is that underage children can’t play games in internet bar.
After reading the report, what is your feeling? I don’t know, but as a Chinese young man when I saw American parents’ response, I felt a little surprise, but after thinking for a while. I totally can understand American parents’ generous. The education in America is open and creative, students can pick classes interests them the most and their youth time is colorful, at the same time American parents give the most support on children’s happy growth. So whenever something new appears, American parents encourage their children to try it and have fun with it. This attitude of education is just like Carr’s attitude about the new style of writing and research online, he does not against new products, and he use them positively, he suggested that the new writing style have its forte and since the advent of the information era, he also suggested that we should adopt to the new world. Now let’s analysis why Chinese parents’ attitude is so that tough. In my point of view, Chinese parents’ thinking is traditional, they want their children do more sports than staring at the displayer all the time. They believe this new entertainment technology won’t bring good things to their children and the games might bother their children’s grades. This kind of thinking is just like Hedges’ idea in his article “ America the illiterate”. From his words we can figure out that Hedges is conservatism, he believe that the online writing and online blogs even online news make people become illiterate, in his mind, the best way to read and write is by using the traditional way : on the paper . He never try the new things and he just point out his negative attitude.
About the government, we can see that the American government really care about the youth’s growth. The actual policy can greatly reduce the harmful effect from some games that are not suitable for underage children, and the children have no change to get in touch with these bad things. So the effect is significant. The Chinese government does have some rules, but they are not strong enough, some poor self-control kids still may be addicted to the game, so maybe Chinese government should be more thoughtful to change the reality.
We all love games, have fum, but not too much
