After I read this article, I touched a chord. I never reflect on such a social conditions before, maybe because I am not a illiterate or because I just feel like my life is quite good and with no worry about the social problems. But after I read this article about the illiteracy effect.I figured out that how important it is to be knowledgeable or at least be wise and farsighted.
Illiteracy effect is harmful. I personally analyze it into 2 ways. Firstly the illiteracy effect to the persons themselves. The bad influence mainly reflect in their daily life. I can’t imagine like how could a person order some dishes in a restaurant while he can’t even read the menu. And in other aspect, illiterates’ profession is so limited. Because of the lack of knowledge, they can only do some simple work like waiters or manual workers, the job won’t bring them high incomes Their life quality is low. That’s not good for them at all. Secondly the illiteracy effect is preventing social progress. The country would not be that advanced if there are a lot of illiterates in this country. It is easy to explain. The country’s progress needs the strive of all citizens, not only military but also the progress of culture and thinking. So the improvement of people’s knowledge level determines the progress of a country.
Never thought I could come up with these so profound truth sentences.LOL
I appreciate your attention to the living conditions of those who are illiterate. You're right that many of us in more advantageous positions often do not consider how those in less advantageous positions live. This post cold be even stronger with more connection to the texts, both Carr's and Hedges's, through direct quotes.
